Based on pedigree for dirt, Fantastic Light has a distinct edge over his archrival Galileo. He is by Rahy, a proven sire of top-class dirt horses, such as Serena's Song, Mariah's Storm, and Exotic Wood. In fact, Mariah's Storm is the dam of Giant's Causeway, who came within inches of a huge victory in last year's Breeders' Cup Classic in his dirt debut.
Fantastic Light's dam, Jood, a daughter of Nijinsky II, has a good deal of classy Rokeby Stable blood on her female side. Jood's dam, Kamar was champion 3-year-old filly in Canada and Broodmare of the Year in Canada in 1990. She produced multiple graded-stakes winner Gorgeous and Key to the Moon. Kamar's sire Key to the Mint, by Graustark out of Key Bridge, was champion 3-year-old male in 1972, winning the Travers, Whitney, and Woodward. Kamar's dam Square Angel is by Rokeby's 1964 Belmont Stakes winner Quadrangle.
With all these dirt influences, Fantastic Light should have no problem adapting to the new surface. And he's already won a grade I stake over the Belmont Park turf course, so he's already shown he can handle the sweeping nature of the track.
Fantastic Light's dosage profile of 12-0-18-6-2 suggests a horse with a tremendous amount of natural speed, but more than stamina to get him distances of a mile and a half and beyond, which is substantiated by his low dosage profile of 1.24.
