When Nick Zito picked out Albert the Great as a yearling, it didn't hurt that the colt was by Go for Gin, whom Zito saddled to win the 1994 Kentucky Derby. Go for Gin is loaded with stamina, being by His Majesty's son Cormorant, out of a Stage Door Johnny mare.

On the dam side, Bright Feather, runner-up in the Canadian Oaks, is by Fappiano, and has also produced stakes winners Watch the Bird and Sheer Bliss. Bright Feather's dam, In My Cap, won eight races in 17 starts in Canada, winning six stakes, and also placing in the Canadian Oaks.

What is remarkable about Albert the Great's pedigree is that all eight sires in his fourth generation are chef-de-race stallions – Ribot, Tudor Minstrel, Prince John, Never Bend, Raise a Native, Dr. Fager, Northern Dancer, and Buckpasser, making Albert the Great a dream stallion prospect for any breeder looking for a complete outcross. His dosage profile of 8-7-16-2-0 suggests a horse with excellent speed who can carry it classic distances with no problem, which is why Albert the Great has been more effective at 1 1/4 miles. His dosage profile is 1.77, again showing that long distances are no problem. In addition, with stallions such as His Majesty, Stage Door Johnny, and Mr. Prospector, there is no doubt Albert the Great can handle sloppy tracks as well as fast ones.
