Sporting $8-million in capital improvements, New York's Saratoga Racecourse began its 2000 season Wednesday with 27,810 patrons, a record for a July opening at the upstate oval. The track reported total handle on the card of $12.6 million, below last year's opening day wagering total of $13.1 million.

On the West Coast, Del Mar kicked off its seaside meet with a crowd of 31,494, third-largest in track history. Jockey Corey Nakatani had four wins on the card and trainer Baffert's three victories included Stormy Jack, a son of Bertrando who took a division of the split Oceanside Stakes. The other Oceanside division went to Duke of Green (by Warning).
