Lookin At Lucky
Lookin At Lucky indicated his sharpness Sept. 20, working six furlongs in a bullet 1:11 1/5 at Hollywood Park in preparation for the $500,000 Indiana Derby (gr. II) at Hoosier Park Oct. 2.
The son of Smart Strike had been battling an illness suffered after his authoritative victory in the Aug. 1 Haskell Invitational (gr. I) at Monmouth Park. The $1-million Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) Sept. 25 had been mentioned as a possible next start prior to the illness, but the extra week was important in Baffert’s decision to wait for the Indiana Derby, a race he won last year with Misremembered.
Lookin At Lucky’s work was the fastest of 25 at the distance. By comparison, Sidney’s Candy worked six furlongs in 1:12, and stablemate Twirling Candy went the same distance in 1:12 3/5.
Trainer John Sadler said Twirling Candy will ruin next against older horses in the Goodwood Stakes (gr. I), while Sidney's Candy will remain on the grass and point for the Oak Tree Derby (gr. IIT).
