California grade II winner Pretty Unusual died because of complications from emergency surgery Sept. 19. The 4-year-old filly by Unusual Heat won or placed in seven of 14 starts and earned $304,152.
A California-bred, Pretty Unusual raced for Madeline Auerbach, Marie Goda, and Jack Klugman, and was trained by Barry Abrams. Pretty Unusual defeated champion Stardom Bound in the El Encino Stakes (gr. II) in January and finished three lengths behind champion Zenyatta while fifth in the Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap (gr. I) in March.
Pretty Unusual also won last’s year’s Melair Stakes and placed in this year’s Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Stakes.
Auerbach and Abrams' brother, David Abrams, were the breeders of Pretty Unusual, who was produced from the winning Siphon mare Sci Fi Kin.
