Crusader Sword, one of the leading 2-year-olds from his crop, has been pensioned from stallion duty. He will reside at Old Friends at Cabin Creek: The Bobby Frankel Division, which is located near Greenfield Center, N.Y. The 25-year-old son of Damascus stood the last several years at Foggy Bottom Farm near Geneseo, N.Y.
A Virginia-bred, Crusader Sword raced as a homebred for Paul Mellon’s Rokeby Stable. At 2 in 1987, Crusader Sword won the Hopeful Stakes (gr. I) and the Saratoga Special Stakes (gr. II) and ran third in the Futurity Stakes (gr. I). He was grade II stake-placed in 1989, and was retired with six wins from 21 starts and earnings of $327,476.
Crusader Sword began his stud career at Mockingbird Farm in Florida and later stood at Questroyal Stud and at Metropolitan Stud, both located in New York, before Foggy Bottom. He is represented as a stallion by 16 stakes winners, including grade II winners Isitingood and Tin Cup Chalice, and the earners of $17.8 million.
Crusader Sword was produced from grade I stakes-placed Copernica (by Nijinsky II).
