Maryland Industry Plans 'Million Day' Effort

The Maryland Jockey Club, Maryland Horse Breeders' Association, and Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association will team up to support relief efforts at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Money will be raised through a cooperative effort of the three organizations during the 16th annual Maryland Million Day Oct. 13 at Pimlico Race Course. Initial plans include a donation of a portion of gate proceeds and other revenue associated with the Maryland Million, an 11-race program with $1.05 million in purses. Additional contributions from Maryland racing and breeding funds are anticipated.

MJC president Joe De Francis; Richard Hoffberger, President of the Maryland THA; and Tim Capps, executive director of the MHBA, issued a joint statement: "Our Maryland racing industry operates in the shadow of the nation's capital. With Maryland's second-largest day of racing coming up, we wished it to have particular significance by honoring the innocent victims of last week's tragedy. We proudly join together to support the families affected by this horrific attack, as well as the ongoing relief efforts by the many heroic rescue workers."
