Panel Discussion Set on Aftercare of Horses

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association Safety and Integrity Alliance has announced it will hold an NTRA Professional Education Seminar at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington on Oct. 19. The seminar will be presented by Pfizer Animal Health and Keeneland.

Included in the seminar will be a panel discussion on aftercare of the Thoroughbred to be moderated by D.G. Van Clief, Jr., former CEO of Breeders’ Cup Limited. The seminar and panel discussion on aftercare are free and open to the public.

The aftercare discussion will cover a wide range of topics including rehabilitation of horses leaving the racetrack; nutrition for neglected and geriatric horses; fund raising; second-career options; and best business practices. Panelists will include: Randal Raub, director of horse business development and technical service for Purina Mills, LLC; Ericka Caslin of the Unwanted Horse Coalition; Tom Cordova of Cordova Marketing Group; Joseph B. Hoffman, partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Kelley Drye & Warren LLP; and Laura A. D’Angelo, of Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs, who specializes in equine law.

In addition to the aftercare segment, the seminar will feature, health and safety topics targeted specifically to trainers, track medical directors, racing officials, farriers, and regulatory and association veterinarians. A full agenda and list of speakers will be released at a later date.

"The NTRA Professional Education Seminar will assemble leading experts in one location so that attendees can learn about the latest issues, developments and techniques pertaining to human and equine safety in Thoroughbred racing," said Mike Ziegler, executive director of the NTRA Safety and Integrity Alliance.
