Ogden Mills (Dinny) Phipps, patriarch of one of North America’s most distinguished Thoroughbred racing families, announced Sept. 9 that Phipps Stable will offer a select number of its mares during Keeneland’s November breeding stock sale in Lexington.

The Hancock family’s Claiborne Farm, whose association with the Phipps family dates back three generations beginning with the Wheatley Stable of Gladys Mills Phipps, will act as agent for the consignment.

“The decision to sell some of our horses was made as part of the normal course of stable management,” said Daisy Phipps Pulito, who assists her father with stable operations. “My family remains fully invested in the Thoroughbred industry.”

The mares scheduled to be offered include Just Reward and Resort.

Just Reward is the dam of Persistently, who defeated reigning Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra in the Personal Ensign Stakes (gr. I) Aug. 29 at Saratoga. Just Reward (by Deputy Minister), who is out of champion Heavenly Prize, will be sold in foal to Malibu Moon  .

Resort is the dam of Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II) winner and sire Sightseeing. A daughter of Pleasant Colony, she finished second in the Coaching Club American Oaks (gr. I) and third in the Gazelle Stakes (gr. I). She will be offered in foal to Tapit  .

The Phipps family has a long and storied history with Thoroughbred racing and breeding, dating back to Mrs. Henry Carnegie (Gladys Mills) Phipps, grandmother of Ogden Mills Phipps. The tradition was continued by his father, Ogden Phipps, for whom the family’s signature black and cherry silks were carried by Hall of Fame members Buckpasser, Personal Ensign, and Easy Goer, and such champions as Numbered Account, Relaxing, Storm Flag Flying, Vitriolic, and Queen of the Stage.

Ogden Phipps received Eclipse Awards as leading breeder in 1988 and leading owner in 1988-89. He was honored with the Eclipse Award of Merit in 2002.

Ogden Mills Phipps and his children have campaigned Hall of Fame member Inside Information and Eclipse Award winners Smuggler, Rhythm, and Successor. Their graded winners include Sightseeing, Pine Island, Good Reward, Pleasant Home, Educated Risk, Adjudicating, Time for a Change, Mining, Lay Down, Intrepid Hero, and Majestic Light.

In addition to his position as a prominent owner and breeder, Phipps has taken an active leadership role in racing, having served as chairman of The Jockey Club since 1983 and as a member of the Board of Directors of the New York Racing Association. He served as chairman of NYRA from 1976-83. He received the Eclipse Award of Merit in 1978.

Keeneland’s November breeding stock sale will be held November 8-20.
