Ride the Rails Dies in Uruguay

Ride the Rails, sire of grade I winner and successful young sire Candy Ride  , died at age 19 in Uruguay following a bout with colic. The Kentucky-bred son of Cryptoclearance stood at Haras Don Julio.

Ride the Rails was a stakes winner and graded stakes-placed at 2 in 1993 for owner J.R. Murrell. Placed on the 1994 Triple Crown trail, he finished third behind champion Dehere and subsequent Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Go for Gin in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) and second to Holy Bull in the Florida Derby (gr. I). He then ran fourth in the Arkansas Derby (gr. II) in what was his last start of the year.

Returned to the races in 1995, he finished unplaced in his sole start and was retired with four wins from 14 races and earnings of $255,096. He was sent to Argentina to begin his stallion career at Haras Abolengo, which is owned in part by Haras Don Julio.

Candy Ride, from one of  Ride the Rails’ early crops, was an unbeaten champion miler in Argentina prior to being sent to the United States. Racing for Sid and Jenny Craig in California, Candy Ride won all three of his races, including the 2003 Pacific Classic Stakes (gr. I) in track-record time at Del Mar. Candy Ride currently stands at William S. Farish’s Lane’s End Farm near Versailles, Ky.

Because of Candy Ride’s U.S. success, Ride the Rails was imported to the United States to stand at stud. He stood at Pegasus Ranch in California in 2004 and was returned to Argentina after one season.

Ride the Rails, out of the Herbager mare Herbalesian, sired a total of 23 stakes winners.
