Le Glorieux, Won DC International, Dies

Le Glorieux, a top international runner of 1987, died Aug. 19 at Werner Wolf’s Haras du Logis Saint-Germain in Normandy, France, according to the Racing Post. The son of Cure the Blues was 26.

Cure the Blues, a grade I winner at Laurel Park for Virginia resident Bertram Firestone, stood at the Firestone family’s Gilltown Stud in Ireland the year he sired Le Glorieux. Foaled in Great Britain for Petra Bloodstock, Le Glorieux raced for Wolf, a German native.

As a 3-year-old in 1987, Le Glorieux won the Washington, D.C. International (gr. IT) at Laurel after running second to subsequent grass champion Theatrical in the Man o’ War Stakes (gr. IT) at Aqueduct. Le Glorieux also won that year’s Japan Cup (gr. IT) and three German group events, including the Grosser Preis von Berlin (Ger-I).

Le Glorieux’ triumph in the International underlined the international nature of the race. The colt not only boasted ties to the United States, Ireland, Great Britain, and Germany but also to France and Panama. He was trained by Frenchman Robert J. Collet and ridden in the 1 1/2-mile International by Panamanian native Laffit Pincay Jr.

Le Glorieux, out of the Le Fabuleux mare La Mirande, retired with six wins and seven placings from 18 races and earning of $802,418. He began his stallion career at Haras du Mezeray in France. He sired 13 stakes winners, including German group winner Up and Away.
