Albarado Injured in Saratoga Spill

Jockey Robby Albarado suffered a fractured clavicle and left index finger and thumb when he fell from his horse during the gallop out of the first race at Saratoga Aug. 11. The injuries were discovered at Albany Medical Center, where 36-year-old Albarado was taken after riding the Merrill Scherer-trained Hunt for Candie, a 3-year-old filly, to finish sixth in the 5 1/2 furlong event on the Mellon turf course.

Albarado was unseated on the clubhouse turn of the first and was inspected by NYRA’s Emergency Medical Technicians as he lay on the turf course. He was permitted to stand and walk to the ambulance after an extended amount of time, but was transported to the hospital and took off the remainder of his mounts for the afternoon shortly thereafter.

Albarado was undergoing additional x-rays at the hospital and was kept at the facility the night of Aug. 11 for observation. Hunt for Candie was apprehended by the outrider on the backside and returned to her handlers near the winner’s circle. She appeared to be uninjured by the incident.
