Sharp Secretary pulls away to victory in the Duchess Stakes.

Sharp Secretary reeled in runaway pacesetter Simply Spiteful at the head of the stretch and cleared off to post her first stakes victory in the $147,118 (U.S. funds) Duchess Stakes at Woodbine Aug. 7 (VIDEO).

Trained by Lorne Richards for Landsdowne Stables, the locally-based daughter of Cactus Ridge bettered seven rival 3-year-old fillies while completing the seven-furlong Polytrack event in 1:23.45. Eurico Da Silva rode Sharp Secretary to victory with light urging in the lane by 1 1/4 lengths over Kitty in a Tizzy.

Sharp Secretary raced in second as Simply Spiteful broke off from the field by six lengths while posting swift fractions of :22.16 and :44.12. The sharp splits did in Simply Spiteful when Sharp Secretary led a host of challengers past her in upper stretch. Sharp Secretary inched clear to lead Kitty in a Tizzy and Chantal Sutherland by 1 1/2 lengths mid-stretch and she held on gamely. Kitty in a Tizzy finished a head in front of Chantilly Nayla, who closed six wide from off the pace to just miss the place spot for jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson.

Zinn House Doll finished fourth, followed by 9-5 favorite Red Hot Buddha, the 120-pound high weight who was forced to check in upper stretch when shut off while making a run from the rear of the pack. Manx Miss, Derwin's Star, and Simply Spiteful completed the order.

JMJ Racing Stables bred the winner in New York. She was a $1,100 yearling buy at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky in February 2008. The bay filly is out of the Favorite Trick mare Trixie Chick.

Second to Biofuel in the Star Shoot Stakes at Woodbine in April, Sharp Secretary was coming off a 3 1/2-length triumph in an optional claiming allowance race at six furlongs July 17. Da Silva rode the bay filly for the first time in the Duchess, which was Sharp Secretary's fourth win in eight lifetime starts. The winning purse of $87,570 increased her earnings to $228,234.

Sent off as the the third choice, Sharp Secretary carried 115 pounds and paid $8.10, $5.10, and $3.30. Saratoga shipper Kitty in a Tizzy returned $12.50 and $6.60 for trainer Harold James Bond. She completed a $95.50 exacta. Chantilly Nayla, a stakes winner at Fair Grounds this winter, was $4.70 to show.
