No Travers for Winslow Homer

Winslow Homer took the Curlin Stakes at Saratoga on August 1st.

Winslow Homer, nine-length winner of the Aug. 1 Curlin Stakes at Saratoga, will not make it to the Aug. 28 Travers Stakes (gr. I) at the Spa, after having been diagnosed with a condylar fracture of his left foreleg.

According to Tony Dutrow, who trains Winslow Homer for Rick Porter’s Fox Hill Farm, the colt will probably have a screw inserted to stabilize the fracture and could return to racing next year.

“We're anticipating he'll come back,” said Dutrow in a statement. “It's a pretty simple procedure.”

Bred in Kentucky by the Young family’s Overbrook Farm, Winslow Homer was purchased by Porter’s bloodstock agent Tom McGreevy for $310,000 at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale from Eaton Sales, agent. The son of Unbridled's Song  , who also won the Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) in January, was a hopeful along the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands trail, until being sidelined with a stress fracture in February.

Winslow Homer returned to competition in June, finishing third in the Iowa Derby (gr. III) at Prairie Meadows. Out of the grade III-winning Summer Squall mare Summer Raven, Winslow Homer has an overall record of 4-0-2 from six starts, for earnings of $222,825.
