Gerald Jack Coatney, a breeder, owner, and trainer, died July 27 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.  He was 76.

Coatney trained about 15 stakes winners, including Dance On the Line, Moonlight Fantasy, and Schyrbabe, all three of whom he raced in partnership. Dance On the Line won stakes at Ak-Sar-Ben, Fonner Park, and Canterbury Park.

Coatney was the breeder of stakes winner Tumblewood Dancer, who raced for Coatney’s wife, Betty, and was trained by her.

In addition to Betty, Coatney’s survivors include children Cheryl, Lori, Susie and Sam.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 30, Suite A, at the Event Center of Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona, Iowa.
