Keeneland has cataloged 4,857 horses for its September yearling sale. The number, which declined for the second year in a row, is down 6.4% from 2009’s total of 5,189 and represents a 12.6% decline from 2008’s sale record total of 5,555. There are 2,562 colts, 2,292 fillies, and three geldings in the auction’s latest edition.

The sale, which has a new format, will be held in Lexington on Sept. 12-26, with a day off from selling Sept. 18. Changes include starting the sale on a Sunday instead of a Monday, and conducting the first two sessions at night. There are 211 select yearlings listed in Book 1 of the catalog for that portion of the auction.

Book 2 will cover the next four days of selling – Sept. 14-17 – when roughly 325 horses per session will be offered in alphabetical order based on the names of their dams prior to the one-day break, which previously has been on a Friday.

The opening two sessions will start at 7 p.m. EDT and the other 12 will begin at 10 a.m.

Yearlings by 294 stallions will be offered, and yearlings by 121 stallions are cataloged during the sale’s opening week. Of the 40 leading active stallions ranked on the general sires list, 38 are represented. Two of the last three yearlings in the great Storm Cat’s final crop have been cataloged.

According to Keeneland, nearly 200 graduates of the September sale have captured added-money events in 2010, including Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Lookin At Lucky, Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Drosselmeyer, and undefeated champion Zenyatta.

The September sale catalog can be viewed at Keeneland’s website (www.keeneland.com) beginning Aug. 10. Print catalogs will be mailed the week of August 23.
