Trainer Bob Baffert was less than enthused about the Del Mar track condition as Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Lookin At Lucky   worked six furlongs in 1:13 3/5 over the Polytrack in the mist on the morning of July 21.

"He went well, but the track was a little dead," Baffert said. "It was pretty deep coming down the stretch."

Even so, Baffert felt the move keeps the 3-year-old son of Smart Strike   on track to run next in the $1 million IZOD Haskell Invitational (gr. I) at Monmouth Park Aug. 1.

Jockey Martin Garcia did not share Baffert's concern about the track. Riding Lookin At Lucky, he started the drill about six lengths behind El Martillo, ridden by exercise rider Joe Steiner. The pair took off at the five-furlong pole with Lookin At Lucky on the outside, and they ran to the seven-furlong marker for the final time.

Lookin At Lucky closed the gap easily on this workmate and went past as the pair came down the lane to finish about three lengths ahead. El Martillo got a time of 1:15 from the Del Mar clockers.

"He's an amazing horse," Garcia said afterward of last year's juvenile champion who is owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman. "I didn't ask him for anything special anytime. He just gave it to me. You never have to make an excuse for him. He's that good."

Steiner agreed. "He was just toying with me. And I'm on a nice horse."
