With a berth in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Marathon on the line, Abdul Rahman Al Jasmi Racing’s Alcomo will try to defend his title in the $250,000 Greenwood Cup July 17 at Philadelphia Park Casino & Racetrack.
A field of six was entered for the 1 1/2-mile Greenwood, which highlights Philly Park’s 10-race program. Post time is scheduled for 3:50 p.m. EDT.
Alcomo won the 2009 Greenwood Cup by 1 3/4 lengths for his first stakes triumph in North America. It was his only win in six starts last season. The 7 year-old Brazilian-bred son of Rainbow Corner began his 2010 campaign with three failed starts at the Meydan Racecourse in Dubai before returning to the states, but he turned things around with a gutsy, nose victory in the grade II Brooklyn Handicap June 4 at Belmont Park.
Overall, Alcomo is 9-3-2 from 26 starts and has earned $342,402. Trainer Eduardo Caramori has named Cornelio Velasquez to ride the 9-5 morning-line favorite. The horse was bred by Haras Campestre and is out of the Tokatee mare Amazing Singer.
The second and fourth-place finishers in the Brooklyn will be back to take on Alcomo. The runner-up, Haras Cotacachi's Gabriel's Hill, ran a winning race in the 12-furlong contest, setting the pace only to get nipped at the wire by his rival. He has since finished eighth in the Dominion Day Handicap (Can-III) July 1 on the Woodbine Polytrack.
The 6 year-old son of A.P. Indy made only one start last year, winning in Ecuador last summer. This year he has faced some tough competitors, taking on the likes of Precious Passion in the Mac Diarmida (gr. IIIT) in February when sixth and Arson Squad in the Skip Away (gr. III) in early April when fourth—both in Florida. Jockey Eibar Coa, who just recently won the 4,000th race of his career, will come in to ride for trainer Seth Benzel.
Fourth in the Brooklyn was Team Valor International's Stones River. The 5 year-old son of Monarchos has not seen the winner’s circle since his 3-year-old season, but looks to be rounding back into form. A 19-1 longshot in the Brooklyn, he rallied to be beaten by just three lengths despite a troubled trip.
This will be Stones River’s second appearance at Philadelphia Park, having finished fourth in the 2008 Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II). Gabriel Saez will ride for trainer Marty Wolfson.
Completing the six-horse field are A.U. Miner, who comes out of the Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I) at Churchill, Marilyn's Guy, and Jade's Revenge.
The Breeders’ Cup Marathon will be held Nov. 5 at Churchill.
