Zippy Chippy extended his winless streak in official races to 90 Sunday, when the 10-year-old gelding finished fifth in a five-furlong maiden special weight race at Northampton Fair. According to the Equibase chart comment, Zippy Chippy was "through early" after chasing pacesetter Forbes Halo and Love Flight during the early stages of the race.
Zippy Chippy finished 16 1/2 lengths behind Love Flight, who completed the race in :57 4/5 on a fast track, and beat only Steel Surfing, who failed to finish after "propping" and "buckjumping," according to Equibase. Zippy Chippy was sent off as the 3-1 third choice in the wagering. 'Zippy' earned $150 for owner-trainer Felix Monserrate for Sunday's effort. He was ridden by Juan Rohena.
In his eight years of racing, Zippy Chippy has finished second seven times and third on 12 occasions while amassing $29,317 in earnings. This year, Zippy Chippy has won two exhibition races, defeating 10-year-old Standardbred Paddy's Laddy in March and Rochester Red Wings outfielder Darnell McDonald in a 50-yard race on the Red Wings' outfield last month. The win against the minor-league outfielder avenged his defeat against Jose Herrera in a 40-yard race on Aug. 18, 2000. (Chart, Equibase
