Gaviola, shown winning last year's Garden City Breeders' Cup Handicap, has been retired from racing.
Carlos Perez announced the retirement of his homebred grade I-winning filly Gaviola from racing. The 4-year-old Cozzene filly ran eighth in the Sept. 3 Diana Handicap (gr. IIT) closing day at Saratoga. It was her fourth consecutive loss, but she came out of the race in fine shape, and Perez said she retires completely sound. She has arrived at Perez' farm near La Grange, Ky., and Perez is in the process of deciding which stallion to send her to in 2002.

Gaviola, who was produced from the Green Forest mare Forest Key, won eight of 17 races and earned $589,142 while trained by Billy Turner. Last year, she won four stakes: the Garden City Breeders' Cup (gr. IT) and Lake Placid (gr. IIT) Handicaps, plus the Sands Point (gr. IIIT) and Herecomesthebride (gr. IIIT) Stakes. This year, her big win came in the Beaugay Handicap (gr. IIIT) in the spring.
