Hall of Fame trainers Ron McAnally and Jack Van Berg will be honored at the Aug. 9 Edwin J. Gregson Foundation annual dinner. Proceeds from the dinner, which will be held at The Grand Del Mar Resort near Del Mar racetrack, will benefit the California backstretch community, especially college scholarships for children of backstretch employees.
Each year the Gregson Foundation honors prominent members of California’s racing community. While in years past the dinner has been held in Pasadena during the Santa Anita meeting, for 2010 it was decided to move the function to Del Mar. The Gregson Foundation is named for the late trainer Eddie Gregson, who in addition to winning such races as the 1982 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) with Gato Del Sol, worked to help improve conditions for backstretch employees.
Trainer Jenine Sahadi as president of the Gregson Foundation and Angie Carmona, secretary of the group, spearhead the dinner’s organization each year.
“We are proud to recognize Ron and Jack this year for their outstanding careers and their contributions to the industry,” Sahadi said, “and it’s important to support the scholastic efforts of so many of these young people.”
Tickets for the dinner are $250. Cocktails will be at 6 p.m. followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. For further information, contact Angie Carmona at (626) 447-2339.
