Lexicon assumed the lead from the gate and held off Swept Overboard and two others to win Saturday's $142,500 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. III) for the second consecutive year.
Lexicon set fractions of :22.75 and :44.59 under Russell Baze to build a two-length lead over Swept Overboard after a half-mile. 3-10 favorite Swept Overboard slowly edged closer to the leader but failed to get by, finishing three quarters of a length behind the 2-1 second choice. Lexicon completed the six furlongs in 1:07.94 on a fast track.
You and You Alone finished eight lengths farther back in third, four lengths ahead of Riotous Richie, who trailed throughout the race.
Six-year-old Lexicon earned $82,500 for his second stakes win on the year. The Richard Mandella-trained son of Conquistador Cielo began the year with a 1 1/2-length win over Say Florida Sandy in the listed Paumonok Handicap at Aqueduct. He then failed to hit the board in the General George Handicap (gr. II) before facing allowance competition in his last three starts, finishing second to Stormy Jack last time out. Mr. Mrs. Jerome S. Moss's homebred also won the 1999 Ancient Title Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II). He has now won 11 of 35 career starts.
Lexicon returned $6 and $2.10 and led the $1 exacta worth $4.10. Swept Overboard paid $2.10 to place. There was no show wagering due to the short field. (Chart, Equibase
