Xtra Heat earned her 16th win in her 19th career start, leading all the way to win the $150,000 Endine Stakes (gr. III) at Delaware Park Saturday. On a fast track and under jockey Rick Wilson, the 3-year-old daughter of Dixieland Heat completed the six furlongs in 1:09.64.
After dueling with 121 pound highweight Big Bambu through the early going, Xtra Heat drew off from there to win by 5 1/4 lengths over Ivy's Jewel. Big Bambu finished third, followed by Wired to Fly and Superduper Miss.
After finishing second to Victory Ride in the Test Stakes (gr. I), Xtra Heat came back three weeks later to equal the Pimlico course record for six furlongs in winning the listed Straight Deal Breeders' Cup Handicap. The Endine marks her 15th stakes win. The John E. Salzman Sr. trainee earned $90,000 for the win to boost her career earnings to just under $1 million.
Sent off as the 3-5 favorite, Xtra Heat paid $3.20, $2.20, and $2.10. Ivy's Jewel returned $4 and $2.10. Big Bambu returned $2.10. The exacta paid $24.60. (Chart,
