Chinese White went out on a high note by scoring her first group I victory in her final career start, winning the Audi Pretty Polly Stakes (Ire-I) by 1 1/4 lengths at the Curragh June 26.

The Dermot Weld-trained mare is in foal to Cape Cross and is being retired. Prior to the Pretty Polly, Chinese White had finished a good third to Fame And Glory in the Tattersalls Gold Cup (Ire-I) on May 23.

Akdarena broke alertly in the Pretty Polly and went straight to the front under Kevin Manning, opening up several lengths on the field. Pat Smullen, aboard Chinese White, tracked the leader from second, with Flying Cloud and Frankie Dettori sitting a few lengths behind them in third.

The order remained unchanged for much of the race, until the field made the turn into the home straight. With two furlongs to go, Chinese White made her move, striding past Akdarena to take the lead. Flying Cloud was under a drive from Dettori and moved into second with a furlong left to run.

Chinese White had too much gas in the tank, however, and continued to pull away in the final strides to win comfortably. Flying Cloud flattened out slightly in the final furlong, and was just able to hang onto second by a short head over Akdarena.

The final time for the 10 furlongs was 2:03.84 over the good to firm turf course.

With the victory, Chinese White improved her record to seven wins from 14 career starts. The 5-year-old mare is owned by Lady O’Reilly and was bred in Ireland by Skymarc Farm and Castlemartin Stud.

Chinese White, who was named champion older mare in Ireland last year, is by Dalakhani, out of Chiang Mai, by Sadler’s Wells. Her dam was champion 3-year-old filly in Ireland and hails from the immediate family of champions Invincible Spirit and Assessor.
