Favorite Madman Diaries overcame a skirmish for the early lead and romped to a 9 1/4-length victory in the $147,257 Victoria Stakes (VIDEO), Canada's first important 2-year-old test of the year at Woodbine June 19.
Ridden by Jeffrey Sanchez for Wesley Ward, who bred, trains and owns the son of Bring the Heat, Madman Diaries covered the five furlongs on Woodbine's Polytrack in a sharp :57.26.
Now two-for-three in his career, Madman Diaries broke his maiden in his second start by 9 3/4 lengths as the odds-on choice at Woodbine May 9. He began his career with a close second to Victoria rival Firepole in a 4 1/2-furlong allowance at Keeneland April 8.
Madman Diaries was hustled to the lead by Sanchez, but he was headed late on the backstretch by Brock N Rock, who opened up a 1 1/2-length advantage for jockey David Clark after a blistering opening quarter-mile of :21.57. Madman Diaries, racing at the rail, came back on Brock N Rock late on the turn to reclaim the lead and pulled clear at the top of the stretch while running the half-mile in :44.84.
Sanchez put Madman Diaries to a drive and they widened their lead through the lane to win comfortably while running the final fiurlong in :12.42. Brock N Rock held second by three-quarters of a length over Affluence, ridden by Jose Valdivia Jr.
Dogwood Stable's Firepole finished fourth, followed by Hank's Hill and Code Dancer.
Ward bred the winning dark bay or brown gelding in Florida. Madman Diaries is out of Harper N Abbey, by Outflanker .
Madman Diaries carried 121 pounds and paid $4.40, $2.70, and $2.30 as the 6-5 selection. Brock N Rock returned $6.50 and $3, and rounded out a $37.60 exacta. Second choice Affluence, a son of Zavata , was $2.60 to show after suffering his first loss in three starts.
