Heywood Hale "Woody" Broun Dead

Heywood Hale "Woody" Broun, who for years covered the Kentucky Derby on television for CBS and ABC, died Wednesday at Kingston Hospital in Kingston, N.Y. Broun, best known for his multi-colored sports jackets and his observations on horse racing, was 83. A cause of death was not released

Broun's father, Heywood Broun, was a newspaper columnist in New York, and a "compulsive gambler," according to Broun in an interview that appeared earlier this year in the Lexington Herald-Leader. "I had a telephone account with a bookie by the time I was a teenager." He saw his first Derby in 1939.

After graduating Swarthmore College in 1940, Broun served in the United State Army during World War II before becoming a baseball writer. He was a character actor, appearing on Broadway, in a few movies, and on television. He also produced jazz records and was the author of three books.

His wife, actress Jane Lloyd-Jones, died in 1991. Their son, Heywood Oren "Hob" Broun, died in 1987. Arrangements have not been completed.

CBS News' "Sunday Morning" show, hosted by Charles Osgood, will include a tribute to Broun Sunday morning, Sept. 9. It airs from 9-10:30 a.m. EDT (check local listings). The piece will include footage of a Secretariat tribute Broun and his good friend and colleague Bud Lamoreaux produced in 1993, 20 years after the colt's Triple Crown season.
