Miss Singhsix outfights Morena to win the Obeah Stakes.
Team Valor International's Miss Singhsix closed from last place to post a hard fought victory in the $150,000 Obeah Stakes (gr. III) (VIDEO) at Delaware Park June 12.
With jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. aboard, the 5-year-old daughter of Singspiel
just got up at the wire to prevail by a neck over Morena
. Stage Trick
, with Jose Caraballo, set early fractions of :47.47 for the half mile and 1:11.90 for the three-quarters before finishing third, 1 1/2 lengths behind the winner. The final time for 1 1/8 miles was 1:50.87 over a fast main track.
Previously, Miss Singhsix finished third to Life At Ten in the Sixty Sails Handicap (gr. III) at Hawthorne Park April 17. On March 20, the Martin Wolfson trainee ran third in the Rampart (gr. III) at Oaklawn Park. With the Obeah victory, she raised her career record to five wins from 19 starts with earnings of $317,138.
“When I asked her, she really came on and I thought I was going to blow by Morena, but she really put a great fight,” said winning jockey Jose Valdivia. “With my mare, I saved ground until about the middle of the turn and then I took to her out. We had to lose a little bit of ground, but she was really running on.
“It was a dogfight for the last eighth of a mile. She is a really nice mare and she showed she can run against some tough quality horses. She handled this track well today and I think this race will set her up perfect for the Delaware Handicap.”
The Obeah is the final local prep for the $750,000 Delaware Handicap (gr. II) to be run July 17 at 1 1/4 miles. Last year, the Wolfson and Valdivia trainer/jockey combination finished second with Icon Project in the Delaware Handicap.
Miss Singhsix returned $6.60, $3.40, and $2.80 as the favorite in the field of eight. Morena capped an exacta (5-10) worth $24.40. The trifecta (5-10-1) was $165.20.
The winner was bred in Ireland by John O’Connor and is out of the Miswaki mare Whatamiss.
