Gross And Average Fall At Canadian Yearling Sale

Gross revenue and average price declined significantly at the Canadian Breeders Sales' select yearling auction at Woodbine on Tuesday. Colts by Sultry Song and Tale of the Cat brought $150,000 apiece to top the auction. (All figures involving money in this story are reported in Canadian dollars.)

The 182 horses sold grossed $6,458,000 and averaged $35,484. The gross and average were down by 14.2% and 18.5%, respectively, from last year, when 173 yearlings grossed $7,527,900 and averaged $43,514. This year's buy-back rate was 28.9%, up from last year's figure of 25.8%.

The $150,000 Sultry Song colt was purchased by Canadian trainer Roger Attfield from Woodlands (Gail Wood), agent. The colt is the first foal produced from the 5-year-old unraced Gilded Time mare Fillly of the Jag, who is a half-sister to Canadian champion Colorful Vices and stakes winner Very Formal, who finished second in the 1990 Queen's Plate (Can-IR).

The $150,000 Tale of the Cat colt was bought by Stubbs Investments from Huntington Stud Farm, agent. The colt is the second foal produced from the 6-year-old unraced Vice Regent mare Regent n'Flashy, who is a half-sister to Flashy n Smart, winner of he 1997 Virginia Handcap (gr. III) at Calder Race Course. Regent n'Flashy also is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Bold n' Flashy.
