Fit To Fight Colt Tops Washington Yearling Sale

A colt by Fit to Fight brought the top price of $105,000 at Washington Thoroughbred Breeders Association's summer yearling sale. The auction was held on Tuesday at the Morris J. Alhadeff Sales Pavilion at Emerald Downs.

Consigned by Northwest Farms, agent, the colt was purchased by Dave and Jill Heerensperger of Bellevue, Wash. The colt was produced from the 9-year-old winning Fast Play mare Non Stop Chatter, who is a half-sister to stakes winners Firesweeper and Serenity Road. Firesweeper was Washington's champion 2-year-old filly in 1985 and champion 3-year-old filly in 1986.

Tim McMurry, acting on the behalf of Darby Dan Farm, purchased the highest-priced filly, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Smart Strike, for $100,000 from Northwest Farms, agent. Produced from the 9-year-old unraced Believe It mare Bisbee, she is a half-sister to stakes winner Taste the Passion.

In all, 133 yearlings were sold for a gross of $2,358,400 and an average price of $17,732. The gross and average were down by 23.0% and 14.3%, respectively, from a year ago, when 148 horses were sold for a gross of $3,063,500 and an average of $20,699. The median price stayed the same at $15,000.
