Dismissed at odds of 18-1, Querari was a determined winner of the Premio Presidente della Repubblica GBI Racing (Ity-I) at Capannelle May 16.
Under a strong ride by Eduardo Pedroza, Querari overtook favored Voila Ici in the final yards to post a three-quarter length victory.
Querari was settled in mid-pack by Pedroza as Voila Ici was sent up to dispute the early lead with Johannes Mozart. Jockey Mirco Demuro, who was aboard Voila Ici, was able to get his charge to rate just off the pace in third, as Johannes Mozart was then joined on the lead by Night Magic.
Voila Ici assumed the lead with just over three furlongs to run, but both British raiders, Pressing and Campanologist, along with Querari, were beginning to make their runs. The four horses fought for the lead for the final two furlongs. Voila Ici was able to rebuke both Pressing and Campanologist, but could not hold off Querari, who got up in the final strides to win.
Voila Ici held on for second, with Pressing nailing the third spot, 1 1/2 lengths further back. Final time for the 10 furlongs was 2:06 over a ‘heavy’ turf course.
After the race, winning trainer Andreas Wohler said, “Querari had several entries in group III races in addition to this. We will now be thinking of the Arlington Million (gr. IT).”
Querari was bred in Germany by his owner, Stiftung Gestut Fahrhof. He is a 4-year-old colt by Oasis Dream, out of the Acatenango mare Quetena. His second dam, Quebrada (by Devil’s Bag), was the champion 2-year-old filly in Germany in 1992, and was also named the champion older mare in Germany the following year.
