Handle, Attendance Increase on 'Susan' Day

Pimlico Race Course reported solid business figures for its May 14 program, which featured the grade II Black-Eyed Susan Stakes and promotions tied to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure program.
 
Attendance was reported at 27,609, up 15.5% from 23,891 last year. Total handle on the 13-race card was $13,238,877, up 10.4% from 2009, officials said.

The Maryland Jockey Club caught a break when storms forecast for mid-afternoon through midnight held off until just after the last race. The sun was out for most of the day, and temperatures were in the 80s.

The MJC pledged to raise a minimum of $100,000 for the Komen program--50% for a Maryland affiliate and 50% for breast-cancer research. Pink was the color of the day.

The Legends for the Cure race, which featured retired female jockeys, was a big hit with the public and tied in well with the Komen program. Gwen Jocson, who hadn’t ridden in a race since 1999, won the event.
