NTRA, Jockey Club Respond to Congressmen

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association and Jockey Club have released their responses to two members of Congress requesting an update on steps the horse racing industry has taken the past two years to address issues tied to equine health and safety.

New Mexico Sen. Tom Udall and Kentucky Rep. Ed Whitfield requested the information via letter the week of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr.I) and asked for prompt responses.

In 2008, a Congressional committee held a hearing into horse racing in the wake of the breakdown of the filly Eight Belles in the Derby and reports Derby Big Brown had been administered anabolic steroids. This year's letter to industry groups is the first response from Congress since that hearing.
