Peter E. Poole, who worked for E.P. Taylor’s Canadian-based Windfields Farm during the time of Northern Dancer, died May 9 at Rouge Valley Health System near Ajax, Ontario, Canada. He was 89.

Poole started working for Taylor in 1950 and became general manager in 1968. He retired from Windfields, located near Oshawa, Ontario, in 1986.

During Poole’s stint with Windfields, Taylor bred and/or raced such Canadian greats as Northern Dancer, Nijinsky II, Glorious Song, and countless others.

Poole was awarded the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Mint Julep Cup. He is a member of the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Salvation Army or the LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society.
