Mr. Livingston caught Honorable Pic in the last three strides to win the $147,700 Miami Mile Breeders' Cup Handicap for 3-year-olds and up at Calder on Monday.
Ridden by Abel Castellano Jr., Mr. Livingston matched the course record of 1:33 3/5 for one mile on the turf. The 4-year-old son of El Prado paid $11.80, $6, and $4. Honorable Pic, who led throughout, finished a head behind the winner. It was another half-length back to the fast-closing Pisces in third as the favorite, Band Is Passing, finished fourth.
Trained by William Kaplan for David and Teresa Palmer, Mr. Livingston won for the sixth time in 18 starts and increased his career earnings to $291,853.
"We'll probably keep him on turf, although he can go the other way (dirt) if a race comes off," Kaplan said. "We'll discuss it, but you always dream about the Breeders' Cup (Mile)."
Owner David Palmer noted that Mr. Livingston was on the Triple Crown trail as a 3-year-old of 2000 until injuring himself in the Flamingo. "We've always had faith in him," Palmer said. "He missed a lot of his 3-year-old season after the Flamingo. He had a deep foot bruise and lost part of his heel. We gave him all the time he needed because we knew what a good horse he was."
