New Farm, Perkins Earn Second Graded Stakes Win in Sorority
New Farm and trainer Benjamin Perkins Jr. teamed up for their second graded stakes win in a matter of minutes Saturday, when 4-5 favorite Forest Heiress led at every call in the $150,000 Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park. Moments before, New Farm's Perkins trainee Delaware Township rallied from the back of the pack to win the Forego Handicap (gr. I) at Saratroga.With the win, 2-year-old Forest Heiress remains perfect from three lifetime starts. The homebred Forest Wildcat filly previously won a maiden race and a listed stakes, both at Monmouth Park. She earned $90,000 for Saturday's win.Under Dale Beckner and on a fast track, Forest Heiress completed the six furlongs in 1:11.61 after setting splits of :21.90 and :45 flat."She broke like a shot and was running pretty easy," Beckner said. "She's a classy horse and does everything you ask her to do. Today she did it pretty easily."She finished 3 1/4 lengths ahead of second place Haunted Lass. Divine Angel was another 4 1/2 lengths back in third, followed by Lost Expectations and Purple Princess. Goodness lost her rider at the break after stumbling.Forest Heiress paid $3.60, $2.80, and $2.10. Haunted Lass returned $6.60 and $3.20. Divine Angel paid $3.20 to show. The exacta returned $25.80.
