Del Mar will honor The Thoroughbred Corporation's recently retired Point Given on Wednesday when the popular chestnut will be paraded prior to the fourth race of the track's closing day card.
The multiple grade I winning son of Thunder Gulch was retired due to an injury to his left foreleg detected Thursday. On Saturday, Point Given was standing comfortably in his stall at Del Mar and receiving attention from members of trainer Bob Baffert's staff.
"He's such a sweet horse," said exercise rider Dana Barnes, as Point Given nibbled at the palm of her hand. "People make him out to be such a monster (because of some of his antics), but he's really a sweetheart."
The Del Mar Futurity, which had figured to be the closing day feature, will now play second fiddle to the presence of Point Given and will feature The Thoroughbred Corp.'s Baffert-trained Officer.
