Elizabeth Moran’s grade I winner Mushka has been retired from racing because of an ankle issue and booked to Distorted Humor  . The 5-year-old Empire Maker mare is boarded at Reiley McDonald and Arthur St. George’s Eaton Sales near Lexington.

Mushka was purchased as a 3-year-old in training by Moran’s Brushwood Stable (Eaton Sales, agent) for $2.4 million at the 2008 Keeneland November breeding stock sale from Ahmed Zayat’s Zayat Stables. While racing for Zayat Stables, Mushka captured the 2007 Demoiselle Stakes (gr. II) for trainer William Mott.

Mushka stayed with Mott after the sale and won or placed in six stakes, all graded, in 2009. She captured the Juddmonte Spinster Stakes (gr. I) and the Glens Falls Handicap (gr. IIIT). Her stakes-placings included a runner-up effort in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (gr. I). Mushka finished fourth in the March 28 Orchid Stakes (gr. IIIT) in her last start.

For her career, Mushka won or placed in a dozen of 19 races and earned $1,096,125.

Diane Snowden is the breeder of Kentucky-bred Mushka, whose stakes-winning dam, Sluice (by Seeking the Gold), produced an Unbridled's Song   colt this year.
