A Whywhywhy filly, which posted the fastest three-furlong workout time of :32 4/5, brought $150,000 April 21 to top the third session of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. spring sale of 2-year-olds in training in Central Florida. Tommy and Bonnie Hamilton’s Kentucky-based Silverton Hill operation purchased the chestnut juvenile from Shadybrook Farm, agent.

Bred in Illinois by T/C Stable, the filly is a half sister to the winners Sorrel of the Sea (by Yonaguska) and Big Lou (by Malibu Moon  ), who finished second twice and third once in three added-money events. Their dam, the winning Boundary mare Vermilion Sea, finished second in the 1999 Lassie Handicap at Hastings Park in Canada.

Michael Yates of Shadybrook purchased the Whywhywhy filly for $37,000 from Bluegrass Thoroughbred Services, agent, at the 2009 Keeneland September yearling auction.

The gross for the 174 horses that sold during the OBS spring auction’s third session was $4,751,000. The average was $27,305, and the median was $18,500. Compared to last year, the number sold declined 7.9%, but the gross was about the same, increasing a mere $6,500. The average and median both increased 8.8%.

The buy-back rate advanced to 28.4% from 27% in 2009.

The fourth and final session of the sale is scheduled for April 22, beginning at 10:30 a.m. (EDT).
