Tiznow Works Toward Return to Competition

Tiznow, last year's Horse of the Year and Breeders' Cup Classic winner, worked seven furlongs on the fast main track at Del Mar this morning in 1:25 4/5. Trainer Jay Robbins plans to ship the horse Tuesday to Belmont Park, where he will run in the grade I, $500,000 Woodward at nine furlongs on "Super Saturday," September 8.

"Chris [rider McCarron] said he slowed him down as much as he could," Robbins said following the work. "By his nature, he goes fast," he said, adding, "He's pretty tough in his gallops. He's plenty fit."

McCarron had his charge several lanes out from the rail and never asked him for any real speed in the drill that started at the three- quarter pole and finished at the seven-eighths. Del Mar clockers caught the big colt in splits of :12, :24, :36 2/5, :48 3/5, 1:00 3/5 and 1:13 1/5 en route.

Quarter cracks in his right-front hoof and a recurring back problem, however, have forced him out of racing action since his March 3 victory in the grade I Santa Anita Handicap.

Tiznow's work Thursday was his second consecutive strong showing. On August 22, Tiznow went a mile in 1:35 1/5 at Del Mar under his Hall of Fame jockey, Chris McCarron. He galloped out nine furlongs in 1:48 2/5 and was pulled up by an outrider after he had gone a mile and a quarter in 2:02 4/5.
