Stewards in Kentucky have suspended two trainers for six months each as a result of the positive tests for prohibited Class A substance desmethyltramadol.
According to senior state steward John Veitch, who announced the action during the March 16 meeting of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, the drug is a synthetic painkiller.
Trainer Dean Ward was suspended 180 days, from Feb. 15 through Aug. 13, after his horse, Dreamintowin, tested positive following the third race at Keeneland Oct. 23, 2009.
Robert Watkins was ordered suspended from Feb. 15 through Aug. 13 for the positive on his horse Cajun Mon, who ran in the sixth race at Turfway Park Oct. 7, 2009.
Veitch said Watkins has appealed the ruling and Ward is serving his suspension.
