Scatter the Gold Wins Second Jewel

Sam-Son Farms' homebred 3-year-old colt Scatter the Gold won the $283,800 Prince of Wales Stakes--the second jewel in the Canadian Triple Crown-- Sunday at Fort Erie. Scatter the Gold won for the first time last month when he won the first leg of the Triple Crown, the Queen's Plate Stakes. Scatter the Gold trailed the seven-horse field early on, rallied while three-wide on the second turn, and split horses at the top of the stretch to earn the victory. Over a fast track, he completed the 1 3/16 miles in 1:56.01 under Todd Kabel.

Scatter the Gold (Mr. Prospector--Dance Smartly, Danzig) began his racing career in March with a fourth-place finish in a 1 1/16-mile maiden race. He was then fifth in a Keeneland maiden race in April, finishing 13 1/4 lengths behind Dwyer Stakes (gr. II) winner Albert the Great. He finished third in two maiden races at Woodbine, the latter on turf, before his Queen's Plate win. The Mark Frostad trainee earned $170,280 for the win, his second in six starts. Dance Smartly, dam of Scatter the Gold, won the 1991 renewal of the Prince of Wales on her way to sweeping the Canadian Triple Crown.

As the odds-on favorite, Scatter the Gold returned $3.10, $2.60, and $2.10. The winning exacta, completed by For Our Sake, paid $2.10.

Cool N Collective came home third, followed by I and I, Mr. Spike, Runaway Love, and Personal Secret. (Chart, Equibase)
