Breeders’ Cup isn’t quite ready to say what the World Championships will look like in the future.

The Breeders’ Cup board of directors met Feb. 25, but according to organization officials spent most of its time discussing the future direction of the organization, which embarked on a strategic planning process last year.

Breeders’ Cup president and chief executive officer Greg Avioli was traveling Feb. 26, but in a statement said: “(The Feb. 25) meeting was devoted to updating the board and to acquire further input and direction in the ongoing strategic planning we are working toward completing by this summer.”

The board is scheduled to meet again in April.

There has been plenty of behind-the-scenes talk about the future structure of the World Championships—one permanent host site, multiple rotating host sites, fewer races, and even night programs. The strategic planning process also involves the Breeders’ Cup Stakes program and corporate sponsorship.

No host site has been announced for 2011. This year’s Breeders’ Cup is scheduled for Nov. 5-6 at Churchill Downs; the number of races hasn’t been released, and usually isn’t until the spring.
