California Flag and Dancing in Silks, both Breeders’ Cup winners last year, share the honor of California-bred Horse of the Year for 2009.

Dancing in Silks captured the Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I). California Flag’s Breeders’ Cup win came in the Turf Sprint.

Dancing in Silks (Black Minnaloushe—Lemhi Love, by Royal and Regal) earlier was named Cal-bred champion sprinter and older male of 2009. He has a lifetime mark of seven wins from 15 starts and earnings of $1,468,622.

California Flag, first in eight of 17 lifetime races, earlier was voted Cal-bred champion turf performer of 2009. California Flag (Avenue of Flags—Ultrafleet, by Afleet), has earned $1,004,596.

The Usual Q. T., 2009 Cal-bred champion 3-year-old male, was the other Horse of the Year finalist. He is by Unusual Heat out of the Western Fame mare Lunge.
