Retired jockey Flavio Martinez III, who rode two-time Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT) winner Da Hoss the first three times the gelding raced, died unexpectedly Feb. 17 in Albuquerque, N.M., according to his former agent, John Boudreau. He was 51.

Martinez won all three times aboard Da Hoss, including the 1994 ATBA Sales States by 10 lengths at Turf Paradise. Martinez also was an early rider of another up-and-coming star. He was aboard subsequent millionaire Annoconnor when she won the 1987 Molly Butler Handicap at Turf Paradise at 2.

A leading rider at Turf Paradise for years, Martinez won 1,918 of his 15,512 mounts from 1979-98. His runners finished second or third in more than 3,600 races and earned a career total of $9.7 million.

Martinez, who captured 91 stakes, also won stakes aboard such others runners as A Wild Past, Bueno, Curribot, In a Breeze, Left the Latch, O’Hacco, Tantoro, The Barking Shark, and To the Post.
