The New Mexico Horse Breeders Association announced its 2009 state-bred champions at its annual awards banquet held at the Marriott Hotel in Albuquerque Jan. 28. Championships for both Thoroughbred and Quarter Horses were unveiled.
On hand was jockey Calvin Borel and Dr. Leonard Blach from Team Mine That Bird, the New Mexico-based gelding who won the 2009 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). Borel was presented a trophy from NMHBA president Q. Mike Cadotte.
During the evening, William T. Stradley was named the state’s outstanding breeder.
The Thoroughbred champions are:
Rig’s Runner, champion 2-year-old colt/gelding; owned by Derrell Riggan; bred by V.J. Callaway
Glory Be Mine, champion 2-year-old filly; owned by Bobby J. McQueen and Dale F. Taylor; bred by Ginger Washburn.
Lefty Who, champion 3-year-old colt/gelding; bred and owned by Same E. Stevens
Happy Me, champion 3-year-old filly; bred and owned by Rita J. Danley
Gulchrunssweet, champion older horse/gelding; owned by Stable H.M.A. and Triple J. Racing; bred by William T. Stradley.
Negotiableafections, champion older mare; owned by Terry Millenbine; bred by William T. Walker
Ghostly Moves, Thoroughbred stallion of the year; stands at V.J. Callaway’s Callaway Farm near Hobbs
Seeking the Cat, Thoroughbred freshman sire of the year, owned by Larry R. and Teresa N. Teague; stands at Lady T Ranch near Hobbs
Dam Stand, Thoroughbred broodmare of the year; dam of Negotiablafections; owned by William T. Walker
