East Long Lake, who is in foal to 2007 and 2008 Horse of the Year Curlin , brought $105,000 Jan. 19 to top the opening day of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. (OBS) winter mixed auction in Central Florida. The consignor preferred session generated mixed results, with the average price rising 13.2% from 2009 and the gross revenue falling 36.7%. The median increased 24.4%.
Mary K. Haire purchased unraced East Long Lake, who is carrying her first foal, from Richard Kent’s Kaizen Sales, agent. Bred by Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Stud in Florida, East Long Lake is a 4-year-old daughter of Sultry Song and the winning Inverness Drive mare Antoinetta.
East Long Lake is a half-sister to three added-money winners, including D J’s Rainbow (by Tom Rolfe), who scored in the 1995 Royal Palm Handicap (gr. IIIT), and Ok by Me (by With Approval), who captured the New Hampshire Sweepstakes Handicap (gr. IIIT) in 1997 and the Lexington Stakes (gr. IIIT) and Tropical Park Derby (gr. IIIT) in 1996.
The opening day’s results included a gross of $918,700 for the 94 horses that sold. The average was $9,773, and the median was $5,100. In 2009, the 168 horses that sold during the first session grossed $1,450,200 and averaged $8,632. The median was $4,100.
The no bid/buy-back rate rose from 27.9% last year to 31.9% this year.
The OBS winter mixed auction will end its two-day run with an open session Jan. 20. Selling will begin at 11 a.m. (EST).
