Jockey Chantal Sutherland, who won two grade II stakes over the Jan. 16-17 weekend at Santa Anita, is one of three finalists for a Sovereign Award as Canada’s outstanding jockey for 2009.
Sutherland, who rides at Woodbine in Canada and in Southern California, posted her first graded stakes win at Santa Anita with Amen Hallelujah in the Jan. 16 Santa Ynez Stakes (gr. II). The following day, she won the El Encino Stakes (gr. II) with 29-1 longshot Pretty Unusual.
The native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada earned Sovereign Awards as Canada’s outstanding apprentice jockey in 2001 and 2002.
In addition to her riding career, Sutherland has also been featured in cosmetic ads and is among the stars of the reality show “Jockeys” on the Animal Planet television network.
The other Sovereign jockey finalists are Eurico Rosa DaSilva and Patrick Husbands.
The complete list of Sovereign Award finalists was released Jan. 18 by the Jockey Club of Canada. The awards will be presented at the 35th annual Sovereign Awards dinner Jan. 29 at the Ultra Supper Club in Toronto, Ontario.
