Richard's Kid, upset winner of the Pacific Classic (gr. I), has been purchased by Zabeel Racing International and will continue to be trained in California by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert.
The transaction was announced by agent Omar Trevino Jan. 15.
A 5-year-old son of
Lemon Drop Kid out of the
Broad Brush mare Tough Broad, Richard’s Kid has won six of 21 starts, with two seconds, and five thirds. He has earned $801,370.
Richard’s Kid was bred in Maryland by Fitzhugh. He won his first stakes in the 2009 John B. Campbell Handicap when he was trained by Richard Small. Purchased by Arnold Zetcher in mid-year, Richard’s Kid went off at 24-1 odds in the Pacific Classic. Racing second to last in the 12-horse field for most of the race, Richard’s Kid unleashed a strong drive while five wide coming off the turn. Even though jockey Mike Smith lost his whip deep in the stretch drive, Richard’s Kid collared
Einstein at the wire for the upset.
He completed his 2009 campaign with a third in the Goodwood (gr. I) and finished sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I).
Earlier in the week, Zabeel acquired emerging 3-year-old
Conveyance in another private purchase. Conveyance will race Jan. 16 in the San Rafael (gr. III) at Santa Anita for Baffert.
