Grade I winner Rail Trip, last seen finishing third in the Pacific Classic (gr. I) at Del Mar in September, is back in training at Hollywood Park, trainer Ron Ellis said Dec. 30.
Ellis said Rail Trip, who has been jogging on the main track since Dec. 27, is being pointed for a return at Hollywood, probably in the Mervyn Leroy Handicap (gr. II) in May.
After winning the Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I) July 11, the goal was to have him ready for the Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) at Santa Anita in November. But that was scrapped following his Pacific Classic effort Sept. 6, in which he was beaten by one length as the favorite by 24-1 shot Richard's Kid.
"He came out of Del Mar with his feet a little sore," Ellis said. "I tried to get him ready (for the Breeders' Cup) but he was not at his best, and I couldn't push him anymore. He's had a full two months off, and he's fine now."
Ellis said Rail Trip would likely compete in the Hollywood stakes series for handicap horses (Mervyn LeRoy, Californian, Gold Cup) in preparation for the 2010 Breeders' Cup Classic at Churchill Downs. Rail Trip has raced exclusively on synthetic tracks in Southern California.
"He really handles Hollywood Park well, and that's kind of a synthetic track mixed with dirt," Ellis said. "I think he's going to like it (Churchill Downs)."
Owned by Jay Em Ess Stable, the soon-to-be 5-year-old son of Jump Start –Sweet Trip, by Carson City, won four of seven races in 2009 with runner-up finishes in both the Mervyn LeRoy and the Californian (gr. II). He banked $742,790 during his sophomore campaign.
Unraced at 2, Rail Trip triumphed in both of his starts late in the season as a 3-year-old, part of a five-race win streak to begin his career. The bay gelding's lifetime mark stands at 6-2-1 in nine races with earnings of $787,790.
