Turf Sprint Added to Dubai World Cup Card

The Dubai Racing Club announced Dec. 24 it has added a new $1 million race to the Dubai World Cup card of March 27, 2010, at the new Meydan Grandstand and Racecourse in Dubai. The new race means the World Cup card will have eight races, seven for Thoroughbreds and one for Arabians, with total purses of $26.25 million.

According to a press release, the new race, the Al Quoz Sprint (UAE-III), will be contested at 1,200 meters (six furlongs) on grass. Meydan, the new track in Dubai that replaces the former Nad Al Sheba, will be the site of the Dubai World Cup for the first time in 2010. Meydan has a 1 1 /2-mile turf course outside the 1,750- meter all weather course and a 1,200-meter turf straight course adjoining the outside track over which the turf sprint will be contested, according to the release.

Saeed Humaid Al-Tayer, president and CEO of Meydan, said the in the press release that the 15th renewal of the World Cup "will not only be a milestone for the sport in the UAE but also for the rest of the world as Meydan begins to fulfill its core mission — to be the Thoroughbred destination of the world."
